What is SBTi? And what is its connection to carbon credits? . . . Over the past year, the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has not just gained attention—it has sparked intense debate. Following its announcement regarding the use of Environmental Attribute Certificates (EACs), including voluntary carbon markets, for abating Scope 3 emissions, SBTi has been at the center of a storm. Recently, SBTi released a set of technical publications as an early step in its Corporate Net-Zero Standard review. This decision has been met with mixed reactions. On one hand, many corporations have welcomed this move, recognizing its potential to stimulate carbon markets and offer more flexibility in achieving their climate goals. On the other hand, critics argue that it opens the door to greenwashing, where companies might appear climate-friendly on paper without making real changes. Some environmentalists and even insiders from SBTi have voiced concerns that this shift could dilute the initiative’s core mission of driving genuine emissions reductions. This controversy piqued my interest, prompting me to delve deeper into what SBTi is, why it wields such influence in the corporate world, particularly regarding carbon credits, and what these recent developments might mean for the future of climate action and corporate responsibility.
